Credit Cards for high income earners – Version 2

$

This is an update to the previous version here which was compiled almost 6 months ago.

highincome1highincome2

I have added a few more cards here due to a request from a friend – AMEX Platinum, AMEX Platinum Reserve and OCBC Elite World. Standard Chartered, DBS and UOB have their own Priority Banking cards that have been mentioned here.

AMEX Platinum definitely stands out as one of the best cards in this category due to the numerous perks, however it is a card by invitation only and its annual fees are >$1k per year. AMEX Platinum Reserve is a close second, but the acceleration is only half at Platinum Partner outlets compared to AMEX Platinum (3.9 miles per dollar vs 7.8 miles). The OCBC Elite World MasterCard used to have JetQuay privileges as well, but there’s hardly any coverage on its website so wonder if there’s a change in its T&Cs too? For now, it is not something I would even look at, as are most OCBC cards.

After 6 months, there have been some changes even to the T&C of the existing cards on the list.

Notably, Maybank World MasterCard has lowered the income requirement from $120k to $80k. There are also a few more places to earn 10x Tr’eat Points (referred to part in italics)

These cards cater to people with more lifestyle and travel choices. Nevertheless, to be honest, aside from the prestige of these cards, I would prefer to stick to my list of cards in the acceleration list.

Watch a movie for $5 at Shaw using the JCB Card

So I was at Shaw Lido this evening purchasing a pair of movie tickets, asking the lady at the counter which card would be the cheapest deal for a pair of tickets this friday evening. She confirmed that it was the SAFRA card and hence I handed her my credit card for payment of $9 per ticket. Then I saw this poster hidden in a corner and I asked her about the promotion, which she said “each ticket costs $5 using the JCB card”. I tried to stop the transaction but by then, she had already charged my credit card :( Nevertheless, the promotion is till the end of the month and since most people in Singapore do not have the JCB card, I think I shall spend some time at Shaw this month.

Best credit card for overseas use or travel (Version 2)

This is an update to the previous version written more than a year ago. Along the way, new cards have come into the picture, T&Cs have been revised.

Before you travel, when it comes to booking of air tickets and accomodation, do be aware that some of the cards do provide free travel insurance and limousine services. There are 3 cards that provide free limousine service to the airport – HSBC Visa Infinite, OCBC Titanium, UOB PRVI Miles but bear in mind the T&C which might change from time to time. If you would like to be treated like a VIP, check in via the Jet Quay terminal when you book using HSBC Visa Infinite, OCBC Titanium and Maybank World MasterCard (not featured here as it does not offer any perks for foreign currency usage).

There are some cards that are excellent for their specific function and I will always bring these cards out because of their excellent earn rates – namely the Citibank Rewards Card where you earn 4 miles per $1 when you shop for clothes/shoes/bags/departmental stores and UOB Preferred Platinum AMEX for dining locally or overseas. (Note that the MasterCard does not give 10x UNI$)

For other overseas spending, the UOB PRVI Miles Card has the best earn rate of 2.5 miles per $1 when you charge to a foreign currency, but bear in mind this is an AMEX card so it may not be that widely accepted. Something to carry around as a backup would be Citibank Premiermiles VISA or Maybank Horizon Platinum VISA which earn a respectable 2 miles per $1. Sometimes when you charge at a foreign merchant, they may allow you to pay in SGD but I would always opt for the foreign currency as I think the bank’s exchange rate is usually better plus you get additional miles.

The March school holidays are just around the corner so choose your cards wisely!

Move aside Apple and Samsung.

This little China company has put its name on the world map with their cheap 3G android phone. At a fraction of Apple’s or Samsung’s price (or even fellow competitors like Sony, HTC, Huawei), without a price plan, this is really too good to be true.

The last time this phone was released in Singapore last month on 27/2/14, it was sold out within 6 minutes. 100000 sets were sold in China in August last year when it was first released.

Lost your phone or phone is spoilt before your current contract is up? Maybe it’s an opportunity to give Redmi a try.

I thought this promotion was over on 31 Dec 13 until I came across the Nets website and saw that this has been extended to 30 Jun 14! However, do take note that the rebate is NOT automatic and you need to claim it from any Transitlink Add Value Machine 2 months after, so just take note!

Comparison of Singapore’s Departmental Stores Members and Credit Cards

$

The major departmental stores in Singapore have been busy during the past couple of years revamping their stores, particularly TANGS and Robinsons Orchard as they unleashed their flagship stores after a major renovation . All of these major players have some sort of rewards programme to entice faithful customers to return to them. BHG and OG are the only ones without any credit card tie-up (BHG used to have a DBS Card but it seemed to have been discontinued).

The best for now are those with 10% rebate or discount – Metro, OG and TANGS. Metro credit card has an additional 5% Metro$ rebate and gives a 20% discount during the birthday month. Robinsons, TANGS and Takashimaya also provides free parking or topup to cashcard when you spend in their stores with a minimum spend of $100-$120. For TANGS, Citibank cardmembers are actually entitled to 6% rebate using any other cards and 12% rebate on members’ days. As such, the Citibank Rewards card is definitely the best as you get 12% rebate + 10x points on your spending, plus you get free parking as well! Another generic credit card that can be used at any departmental store is the UOB-JCB Platinum Card which gives a respectable 3% rebate at these stores and a whopping 5% at Uniqlo, Muji and Meidi-ya.

Minimum $500 spending a month on Maybank Family & Friends Card for 5% rebate

$
0
0

Maybank Family & Friends stood out amongst the rebate cards as it offers 5% on daily spending in supermarkets like NTUC, Cold Storage, fast food delivery, Watsons, Guardian, Popular etc.

However, from 1 Apr 2014, the 5% rebate is only applicable with a minimum spending of $500 per month, other 0.3% rebate applies.

Another card not worth keeping if unable to maintain the minimum monthly spend.

Review of UOB Delight Credit Card

$
0
0

I’ve been asked whether this is a good credit card to keep in the wallet since you get 10+10% off shops under the Dairy Farm Group. Not to mention that it has very high visibility in the papers from time to time.

Before you jump in and sign up for this card, read the fine print carefully.

1. 10% rebate at supermarkets only with $1000 spent per month and till 30 Jun 14

uobdelightThere is a tiered rebate based on your monthly spending on the card. The minimum is 1% and the maximum is 5%. There is a bonus 5% rebate till 30 Jun 14 and on special “Delight Days”.

2. Rebate is given in the form of SMART$.

Anyone who’s been a UOB user will know that the SMART$ have an extremely short lifespan of 6 months from the date of issuance and a lot of times, this amount is forfeited if one is not careful. Any spending done in SMART$ merchants will also allow one to earn SMART$ e.g. 10% SMART$ at Coffee Bean.

3. Cap of SMART$

On top of that, there is a cap of 50 SMART$ for the basic tier and 50 SMART$ for the bonus tier per month, meaning that you can only spend $1000 a month in the supermarkets.

4. 10% off House brand items

This is pretty self explanatory, but does not include promotional items.

All in all, unless one is an ardent supporter of the Dairy Farm Group and will spend $1000 a month on grocery shopping, and will use the SMART$ religiously, there are better alternatives available. Check out the previous review on credit card to use for supermarket shopping here

If you have not already heard about airbnb, you are missing on a very cheap source of accomodation for your travels. To date, I have stayed in Bali, Osaka, New York, London, Paris and these are wonderful places that have expensive hotels and for the price of a hostel or less, I would rather stay in a nice private room or a whole entire to myself or my company of friends. DBS Multiplier – Get up to 2.08% interest p.a.

$
0
0

DBS just introduced this new Multiplier programme, which is unique and gives a higher interest rate based on the amount of money that flows through your account (both in and out). This is illustrated in the diagram below:

This would be good for people who are high income earners as well as those with monthly housing loans and large amounts of credit card spending on DBS cards. The interest rates are not bad for an account with no lock-in period, but bear in mind there is a need to keep $10,000 as a minimum balance or there will be a $5 monthly fee.

dbsmultiplerMy current favourite no-frills account is esaver where they are offering 0.1+0.8%=0.9% for balance less than $50k. I think this Multiplier account is a nice alternative and worth checking out especially for my high income earner friends.

Get up to *10% cashback from online purchase using Standard Chartered credit card till 31 May 14

$
0
0

The headline screams attention, but we all know there is definitely a catch to this.

The 10% cashback has a cap of $50 per spend period and you need to spend a minimum of $2000 per spend period and be the first 5000 Standard Chartered customers per spend period (1-30 Apr or 1-31 May 14) in order to quality.

With a quick calculation, if you spend $3000 using the Manhattan Card with an online expenditure of $500 and the other $2500 on other items, you get $50+ ($3000*3% rebate=$90)=$140, which works out to around 4.67% rebate

Honestly, 4.67% is not that bad, but some of us will recall the days when the Manhattan card provides a 5% rebate for monthly spending of $3000 and above.

If you are planning to buy something more than $500 online during the next month, please follow the following steps:

1. Register online or SMS ESHOP<space>16-digit credit card number to 77222.

2. Be the first 5,000 Cardholders in each spend period (1 to 30 April 2014 or 1 to 31 May 2014) to charge a minimum of $2,000 on any puchases made online and at retail stores
